Charles E. Rackley, MD
Division of Cardiology

When it comes to the three part mission of research, education and patient care, Dr. Rackley believes research is just as important as education, which is why the Charles E. Rackley Research Achievement Award was established through Georgetown’s Grateful Patient Program.

“The NIH is the world’s leading biomedical facility and it is right at our doorstep, so I thought, why not establish our own young investigator awards. There is an intellectual process to medicine. The students and house staff need to learn how information is generated. You have to be able to analyze data, and be critical about looking at patient data. That kind of discipline carries over to the way in which medicine is practiced. The way to deal with patients’ problems isn’t about accumulation of information but knowing how it is acquired.”

Dr. Rackley says these awards are to motivate the faculty as well. “To research, to look again at a situation, means looking at a patient more carefully. We need to focus on the professional pride and the high level in the practice of medicine and to have a commitment to the highest quality of patient care.”

The third annual Department of Medicine Research Day took place on Wednesday, May 10th from 4 - 7pm in the Pre-Clinical Science Building. The Department of Medicine welcomed faculty, fellows, post-doctoral scientists, graduate students, house staff and trainees from the Department of Medicine and Lombardi Cancer Center, and Georgetown medical students, to exhibit poster presentations which highlight their research projects in the clinical and basic sciences.

This year, because of generous patient donations and through the establishment of the Charles E. Rackley Achievement Awards, five first place prizes of $1000 each, were awarded for the best ranked abstracts in addition to second, third, fourth and fifth place winners.

Your participation ensures that this important education and research program is a continued success.
