Conferences
The fellow is expected to attend and to participate in these
teaching exercises:
Clinical training is complemented by a comprehensive didactic
curriculum that not only presents clinical information, but encourages the
in-depth discussion of particular cases and an exchange of ideas among
professionals.
Mandatory conferences:
·
Cardiac
Catheterization Conference
Wednesday - 7:30 a.m.
- 8:30 a.m.
Directors of the catheterization laboratory lead a discussion of
interesting interventional cardiology cases and present brief topical
lectures during this weekly conference. Select cases demonstrate the
application of current technology or challenges in clinical decision-making.
This conference frequently invites guest lecturers, leaders in the field, to
present their own pioneering practices. Conference participants include
catheterization laboratory nurses and technicians, fellows, faculty, and attendings.
Both the cardiac catheterization conference and the
echocardiography conference are tele-conferenced to
Georgetown hospital.
·
Echocardiography
Conference
Thursday - 7:45 a.m.
- 9:00 a.m.
Led by the director of the echocardiography laboratory, this
conference provides critical education on the use and analysis of
echocardiography to manage patients with heart disease. A variety of cases,
including transthoracic and transesophageal images,
are selectively chosen to teach important clinical indications. The sessions
include discussions on current topics and reviews of recent publications. As
well, the cardiology fellow on rotation in the lab gives a brief presentation
on some aspect of echocardiography. Conference participants include faculty,
private cardiologists, fellows, echocardiography technicians, cardiovascular
surgeons, anesthesiologists, and research nurses

These sessions are an opportunity for fellows to focus on a
particular aspect of cardiology, as well as interact with invited guests,
faculty, members of the research staff, and each
other in an informal setting.
Journal
Club
Two fellows jointly present a recent article(s) as well as
past landmark publications for review and critique. Faculty and CRI research staff (e.g., statisticians, epidemiologists) participate
in the discussion.
Research
Conference
This conference reviews the progress of
investigations/research conducted by fellows and provides education in
research-related topics such as statistical methods and analysis. CRI faculty
members are invited to present summaries of their research to expose fellows
to areas of research which they may not encounter during their clinical
training.
Cardiac
Magnetic Resonance Imaging
The director of cardiac MRI leads fellows in a discussion of
the clinical application of MRI, including case studies assessing function,
perfusion and viability. Fellows learn how to interpret MRI images and are
asked to present interesting cases during their MRI rotations.
Pathology
This conference features cardiovascular pathology specimens
from the Armed Forces Institute of Pathology and Washington Hospital
Center. Fellows are
given an opportunity to directly exam the specimens. Hospital Center
cases are presented jointly by a cardiology fellow and a member of the
pathology department.
Cardiac
Catheterization
Along with the presentation of interesting cases by a faculty
member from the catheterization laboratory, this conference often includes
invited guests that are recognized leaders in the field of cardiology. This
conference differs from the weekly cardiac catheterization conference in that
it focuses on hemodynamic cases.
Adult
Congenital Disease
Dr. Karen Kuehl, from Children’s National Medical Center,
presents a lecture series on congenital heart disease, with emphasis on adult
congenital problems. The lecture series is augmented by case presentations.
Arrhythmia
A faculty member from the Cardiac Arrhythmia
Center leads this
conference which spotlights arrhythmia management, difficult ECGs, and
challenging cases from the consult service. Discussions center on clinical
management.
Cardiac
Critical Care
Fellows completing a coronary care unit (CCU) rotation present
their most interesting cases to colleagues and faculty. A CCU faculty member
guides the discussion.

Cardiology
Grand Rounds
Tuesdays – 5:00 pm –
6:00 pm.
The Cardiovascular Training and Education Center (CTEC) at Washington Hospital Center
is a 12,500 square foot, state-of-the-art multimedia conference facility
specifically designed for medical education. The heart of CTEC is a 50-seat
amphitheater with unsurpassed audiovisual technology, hardwired to multiple
operating rooms and animal research laboratories at Washington Hospital
Center. The center,
which also features integrated breakout conference rooms, provides a
stimulating, yet intimate and comfortable environment for advanced medical
education and training.
Faculty from Washington
Hospital Center
and CTEC co-sponsor Cardiology Grand Rounds, annual conferences, and dinner
lectures that feature current topics in all areas of cardiology presented by
international leaders in the field. Fellows are encouraged to participate in
these events.
