Georgetown Dermatology
Residency Training Program
The Dermatology Residency Program at Georgetown University Hospital ceased to function as a separate accredited training program on June 30, 2007 when it joined with the Washington Hospital Center in sponsoring the combined Georgetown University Hospital
- Washington Hospital Center Dermatology Residency Program. This merger brings together the resources and faculty of both MedStar Health hospitals in Washington, D.C. and expands the number of residency and fellowship programs within the MedStar system that have developed joint sponsorship and training at the two institutions.
Background
Drs. Alan N. Moshell and Kevin P. Hogan (the Dermatology Residency Program Directors at the Washington Hospital Center and at Georgetown University Hospital) began planning for the merger in October, 2006 by identifying the strengths of each program. They integrated clinic and conference schedules that same month and in the succeeding months have produced a program of considerable depth and quality. Items:
-
Joint Basic Science Conference, Grand Rounds and Journal Club
-
Expanded clinic experiences for the residents in General Dermatology, Extracorporal photophoresis and phototherapy
-
A clinical rotation for advanced Dermatology residents at the National Institutes of Health
-
More varied and graduated specialty clinic experiences in contact dermatitis, pediatric dermatology, podiatry, laser surgery, cosmetic and plastic surgery, and Mohs micrographic surgery
-
Incorporating into the program the informational resource network and libraries of Georgetown University
-
An indepth exposure to Dermatopathology instruction with three onsite dermatopathologists. Click here for more information about Dermatopathology.
-
A core teaching faculty of 16 physicians (Drs. Hogan, Kupiec, Kauffman, Bourelly, Sina, Skelsey, Chen, McKinley-Grant, Moshell, Nigra, Giannelli, Peck, Coats-Walton, Epps, Silverman, Davidson).
Eventually, the combined GUH-WHC Dermatology Residency Program anticipates having twelve residents with four residents per class. These numbers are further increased with the addition of eight Medical Dermatology residents, two per class.
