Clinical Programs and Services

Adult Leukemia Service
State-of-the-art, nationally recognized program for the treatment of chronic and acute leukemias in adults. This program is associated with national and international study groups and registries for the application of the most up-to-date technologies for the treatment and cure of leukemia. The Leukemia Service is closely associated with the Bone Marrow Transplantation Service so that all leukemia patients have access to the most advanced technologies for the treatment of leukemia.

Betty Lou Ourisman Breast Health Center
The Comprehensive Breast Center provides cancer screening services for women. Patients may schedule an appointment for screening services that focus on breast cancer; breast and cervical cancer; or breast, cervical, skin, and oral cancer. Services may include assessment of individual risk factors for cancer; personalized instruction in breast self-examination; evaluation and monitoring of benign breast conditions; access to a full range of breast imaging services; second opinions regarding mammograms, pathology reports, and/or biopsy recommendations; and, if indicated, referral to specialized services including surgeons and oncologists. Georgetown University Hospital is one of the first hospitals to offer digital mammography and high-resolution ultrasound.

Breast Cancer Clinic
This service is designed for comprehensive evaluation of patients with any stage of breast cancer and to make systemic treatment recommendations. A medical oncologist provides information regarding chemotherapy and normal therapy options and will discuss available clinical trials. Other services include physical therapy and plastic surgery consultations and nutrition and psychological counseling. New cases are discussed and treatment recommendations made in a weekly multidisciplinary conference.

Breast Cancer Consultation Group
For women with newly diagnosed breast cancer, this service offers simultaneous consultation with a surgeon, a radiation oncologist, a medical oncologist, and a nurse case manager about specialized comprehensive treatment. Other services include physical therapy, plastic surgery, consultations and nutritional and psychological counseling.

Combined Modality
The modern management of head and neck tumors requires the input of the ENT surgeon, radiation therapist, and medical oncologist, integrated into the overall medical care of the patient. Initial evaluations are discussed at a weekly tumor board held jointly with ENT and radiation therapy.

Cutaneous Lymphoma Project
Special management of cutaneous lymphomas including timely use of specialized radiation techniques, new chemotherapeutic agents, and biologic response modifiers.

Developmental Therapeutics Program
This clinic focuses on new treatments for patients with advanced malignancies. Typically, studies are not restricted by tumor type and early phase studies do not require measurable disease.

Gastrointestinal Oncology Clinic
Offers protocols for treatment of advanced colorectal, esophageal, gastric, and other gastrointestinal malignancies, as well as adjuvant and neoadjuvant chemotherapy.

Georgetown Brain Tumor Center
This is a multidisciplinary clinic in which a neurosurgeon, radiation oncologist, and medical oncologist provide consultation and evaluation for patients with brain and spinal cord tumors. Several protocol treatments are available according to the needs of each patient. The center is a member of the National Central Nervous System Consortium and, as such, includes a very active basic research lab that supports the clinical activity.

Health Maintenance in the Lung Tumor Survivor
The patient who has survived a major intervention to treat thoracic neoplasms has an increased risk of a second malignancy. Screening and follow-up should include cytology, X-ray, and physical examinations and should be performed in a comprehensive environment. Behavior modification to maintain a smoke-free lifestyle also is important.

Hemapheresis
Therapeutic removal of plasma containing toxic factors or antibodies believed to be important in disease pathogenesis.

Hematologic/Oncology Service
This comprehensive multidisciplinary clinic provides consultation, evaluation, and treatment of all hematologic disorders and hematologic malignancies including: leukemia, Hodgkin's disease, lymphomas, and myeloma.

Comprehensive laboratory analysis of red blood cell, white blood cell, platelet, and clotting factor abnormalities.

Hematology Laboratory Outpatient Services
Treatment of a broad range of hematological problems, including diagnostic and therapeutic modalities with emphasis on thrombo-hemorrhagic disorders.

Palliative Care Program (referrals)
This program is a nursing and medical program offering pain management as well as psychological and spiritual support to patients with malignancies and other severe illnesses. Often times the palliative care team works with the oncologists to assess various treatment options.

Pulmonary Oncology Program
This comprehensive approach to the patient with a known neoplasm of the thorax offers consultation and intervention with chemotherapy or experimental phase I/II therapies as needed. Frequent joint consultations are made with radiation therapy and thoracic surgery.

Urologic Oncology Service
This service provides referral, consultation, and treatment for cancer of the testes, ovary, bladder, kidney, and prostate. Multidisciplinary review of cases by Hematology/Oncology and Urology. Clinical trials are offered.
