Lombardi Cancer CenterFellowship Program In Palliative Care Medicine
Andrew Putnam, MD, Assistant Professor, Fellowship Program Director, Palliative Care Program

Faculty

Program Director: Andrew T. Putnam, M.D. has trained in Family Medicine at State University of New York at Stony Brook and trained in Palliative Care at Massachusetts General Hospital, Boston, Massachusetts.

Faculty involved in Oncology, Hospice Care, Longterm Care and SubAcute Care: All of the oncologists at Lombardi Cancer Center have Board Certification from the American Board of Internal Medicine. The physicians from the affiliated hospice programs have certification through the American Academy of Hospice and Palliative Medicine. The physicians affiliated with the Washington Home are actively involved in the Washington Area Geriatric Consortium, a group of physicians dedicated to education related to geriatrics.

Other Georgetown University Medical Center Faculty: Participants in the fellowship program would have the opportunity to participate in the educational sessions that exist for training of physicians within a variety of Georgetown Programs. Fellows will be encouraged to foster a broad understanding of the practice of internal medicine, oncology, psychiatry, geriatrics, clinical bioethics and pharmacology. Georgetown University Medical Center has accredited fellowship programs in the aforementioned specialties and faculty from these and other programs are available to mentor fellows.

Faculty and Personnel Involved in Interdisciplinary Team: The palliative care program at Lombardi fosters an interdisciplinary approach to patient care around all patient and family interactions. The interdisciplinary team around each cancer patient on the program consists of an oncologist, a palliative medicine physician, oncology and palliative care nurses, and a social worker. In addition, if requested by the patient or by the core staff of the interdisciplinary team, the team can be expanded to include others, for example, representatives of the Pastoral Care, Psychiatry Department, the Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation department, and nursing and other staff from home care and hospice programs. These affiliated programs have a strong teaching focus and the senior faculty and staff in these programs have extensive teaching experience.
