| | Princy N. Kumar, MD, Division Chief Welcome to the Division of Infectious Diseases at Georgetown University Hospital. The division’s prevailing mission is to achieve excellence and distinction in teaching, research and the provision of patient care. Georgetown University Hospital is centrally located in Washington DC, an exciting and ever-evolving city with each presidential election. The nation’s capitol is populated by an exceedingly diverse local and international community with residents and visitors hailing directly from Latin and South America, Sub-Saharan Africa, the Middle East, and Asia. This setting provides for the unique opportunity to gain expertise in the diagnosis and treatment of a vast spectrum of infectious diseases. The division follows patients with infectious diseases familiar to the contiguous United States as well as patients with infectious diseases more commonly found in under-developed regions of the world. Fellows will additionally acquire significant experience in international and travel medicine, bioterrorism, HIV, and infectious complications of solid organ and bone marrow transplantation. Georgetown University Hospital, established in 1898, is an internationally recognized academic medical center that operates as a tertiary care referral center for the surrounding Washington DC metropolitan area. The hospital complex includes 609 inpatient beds, 1,100 physicians, state of the art diagnostic imaging resources, and provides a variety of ambulatory out-patient and infusion services. A flourishing and dynamic clinic practice provides healthcare management for a growing out-patient population of approximately 1000 patients infected with travel-acquired illness, HIV, hepatitis, and various other sexually transmitted diseases. The division is also committed to involvement in state of the art research projects as indicated by current participation in fifteen clinical drug trials. The I.D. practice has the honor of being selected as an AIDS Clinical Trial Group (ACTG) research site and is consequently involved in nation-wide, multi-centered research studies. The clinic’s dedication to treating the “whole person” is further exemplified by its additional patient care services in home infusion supervision, intensive case management, and treatment adherence, nutritional and psycho-social counseling. The Division of Infectious Diseases sponsors a two-year fellowship program for physicians-in-training who wish to specialize in I.D. Renowned division faculty and staff actively participate in the education of house staff at Georgetown University Hospital and medical students from Georgetown University School of Medicine. The practice additionally welcomes residents and medical students from outside institutions who wish to participate in an Infectious Diseases elective month. Fellows rotate on the inpatient consultation and out-patient clinical services, acquiring comprehensive education and training in the field of infectious diseases.
