Ambulatory Education
The ambulatory education program at Georgetown is concentrated in the Division of General Internal Medicine, but is also incorporated into all of the subspecialties. The majority of the ambulatory experience occurs during weekly continuity clinic throughout all 3 years of residency. Residents have a core clinic day and one alternate day in order to eliminate on-call and post-call clinics. There is an 18-month standardized case based pre-clinic conference curriculum that covers common ambulatory medical problems. In addition to building a continuity practice at the residents primary site, there are opportunities for a second clinic for junior and senior residents during elective months where they can see patients with a faculty member in a community based practice. During the junior and senior years ambulatory rotations include a month of primary care based at the VA.; a month on the Internal Medicine Consultation Services during which ½ of the time is spent in the outpatient setting seeing preoperative consults and a month of geriatrics. In addition while on most electives residents will spend ½ the time in the ambulatory setting. There are also opportunities for arranging ambulatory electives in women heath, International Health and in primary care. Ambulatory rotations at Washington area adolescent, indigent and free clinics round out the overall breadth of the ambulatory experience. These include the following: S.O.M.E. (So Others May Eat): a
community-based organization that exists to help the poor and homeless
of our nation’s capital Arlington Free Clinic: a nonprofit,
community based, volunteer driven organization committed to providing
access to quality health care services to low-income, uninsured county
residents. Georgetown Student Health: Interns
