Profile

Welcome to the website of the Georgetown University Department of Medicine. The Department of Medicine is the most diverse department within the internationally recognized Georgetown University Medical Center, with ten academic divisions, including: Cardiology, Dermatology, Endocrinology and Metabolism, Gastroenterology, General Internal Medicine, Hematology and Oncology, Infectious Diseases, Nephrology and Hypertension, Pulmonary, Critical Care and Sleep Medicine, and Rheumatology and Immunology. Our department is comprised of more than 100 full-time clinical and research Faculty, as well as 594 part-time faculty affiliated with various programs and centers situated on the campus of Georgetown University in Washington, D.C. Integral to the goals of the Department of Medicine is our commitment to our core missions of research, education and patient care.

The research focus of the Department of Medicine is broad, and includes active programs in both basic science and clinical research, which are described in detail under each of our divisions. In addition to our Research Programs and Centers within the Department of Medicine, we also conduct research in collaboration with other departments of Georgetown University Medical Center, the Lombardi Comprehensive Cancer Center, and many other national and international institutions and organizations. With 60 clinical trials and 76 funded research studies in progress, including many on the NIH-funded Georgetown University General Clinical Research Center, the Department of Medicine contributes over $32 million to the $125 million dollar research enterprise of the Georgetown University Medical Center.

As part of our educational mission, we provide broadly-based training across all of the disciplines of internal medicine at many different levels to train individuals who wish to conduct scientific research into cures for disease and to treat patients with compassionate clinical care. Our trainees include medical students from our nationally ranked School of Medicine, interns and residents from our ACGME-accredited Internal Medicine Training Program, graduate students from affiliated departments, clinical and research fellows from ACGME-accredited Fellowship Training Programs in each of our divisions, and postdoctoral fellows throughout our many research laboratories.

Our clinical programs provide outstanding and innovative patient care in general and subspecialty medicine. Our Physicians pride themselves in their commitment to offer state-of-the-art compassionate clinical care to all those who seek medical care at Georgetown University Hospital. Year after year, the Department of Medicine has been ranked nationally in multiple different specialty areas, and the Division of Hematology and Oncology Division is part of the Lombardi Comprehensive Care Center, the only facility in the Washington D.C. area designated by the National Cancer Institute (NCI) as a Comprehensive Care Center. Our physicians join those of many other departments of Georgetown University Hospital in being included as the best physicians in the greater Washington area by the Washingtonian magazine.

At Georgetown, we embrace  the goal of bridging state-of-the-art academic medicine founded upon rigorous evidence-based science with the philosophy of compassionate health care for individuals based on the Jesuit tradition of commitment to care for the whole person. To achieve this goal, we understand that the success of Georgetown Medicine depends on the integration of well-funded investigators, exemplary clinical scientists, and caring physicians who have the most advanced knowledge and tools to treat the patients of today, and of the future.

We thank you for taking the time to learn more about our programs and our people at Georgetown University’s Department of Medicine. I hope that in so doing you will understand the pride that we justifiably have in the accomplishments of our faculty, our trainees, and our staff, all of whom work in harmony to promote our shared vision of maintaining the scientific, educational and clinical excellence of our department and our institution.
