The MedStar Georgetown University Hospital/MedStar Washington Hospital Center cardiovascular disease fellowship is a premier program, matched by few with its wealth and breadth of training opportunities. As a nationally top ranked hospital for cardiac care, MedStar Washington Hospital Center treats a large volume of patients who exhibit both common and unusual manifestations of heart disease. Under the tutelage of experienced clinicians who are experts in one or more of the cardiac subspecialties, fellows acquire a strong foundation in cardiology with further opportunities to focus on office practice and preventive cardiology, electrophysiology, interventional cardiology, or research. MedStar Georgetown University Hospital has a long history of excellence in cardiology, starting with the seminal work of Dr. Proctor Harvey. The hospital offers significant opportunities with the basic science community and cardiovascular pharmacologists, and maintains a superb animal facility. The three-year program is ACGME-accredited.

Both institutions, MedStar Georgetown University Hospital and MedStar Washington Hospital Center, are leaders in cardiac care. Their respective cardiology fellowship programs were merged in July 2003 to create a rigorous training opportunity that takes advantage of the strengths of both institutions.

MedStar Washington Hospital Center is a well-reputed, inner-city hospital that has become a leader in cardiology over the last 10 years. Presently, the Hospital Center is the largest cardiovascular referral center in the region. Emergency room admissions include patients with myocardial infarction, acute heart failure, arrhythmias, and cardiac complications. Along with common cardiac illnesses, the hospital treats a variety of unusual and complex problems as patients are referred from the region for tertiary cardiac diagnostic and therapeutic services, including emergency transportation of those who are acutely ill by the MedStar helicopter medevac program.

Under the supervision of highly-skilled clinicians, fellows have tremendous opportunities to manage a variety of cardiac patients at these two institutions, as well as take part in cutting edge research in the field, with active research protocols throughout the breadth of cardiovascular care.
