Ongoing research in the thyroid area includes:
- Examining the effects of treatments on thyroid cancer outcomes
- Studying the side effects of radioactive iodine
- Optimization of the treatment of hypothyroidism
Ongoing involvement in a multi-institutional registry has permitted insight into thyroid cancer management. Current thyroid cancer management includes thyroid surgery, radioactive iodine treatment, and use of thyroid hormone to suppress TSH levels. The impact of each of these treatments on thyroid cancer recurrence and survival is currently being evaluation by our multi-center registry.
Studies evaluating the side effects of radioactive iodine treatment are also being conducted.
Studies in hypothyroid patients are examining markers of effective thyroid hormone therapy and the effects of treatment with liothyronine (T3).
