  • PGY-1 ward months occur at MedStar Georgetown University Hospital (MGUH), Virginia Hospital Center (VHC) and the Washington DC VA Medical Center (VAMC).
  • PGY-1 critical care months occur at the MGUH ICU, MedStar Washington Hospital Center (MWHC) CCU, Fairfax Hospital (FFX) CCU and VHC ICU/CCU.
  • Night Float occurs at MGUH.
  • Emergency Medicine occurs at MGUH and FFX.
  • We have a 4+2+2 block structure for our Categorical interns and residents consisting of 4 weeks of wards/critical care/consult/elective, 2 weeks of elective, and 2 weeks of clinic block.
  • During ward and critical care rotations, there is no continuity clinic. This novel separation of inpatient and outpatient duties enhances resident satisfaction and provides a dedicated ambulatory experience.
  • Preliminary interns do not have clinic block; they have additional elective time.
  • The elective month can be utilized as a research or health policy month as well.

  • PGY-2’s and 3’s do ward months in the above locations as well as the National Institutes of Health/National Institute of Allergy Immunology and Infectious Diseases.
  • PGY-3’s do one medicine consult month (50% inpatient and 50% outpatient).
  • Geriatrics is split between MGUH, VAMC, and the Washington Home (a local nursing home).
  • The elective month can be utilized as a research or health policy month as well.

    *ALL interns and residents have a consecutive six-day break during the Christmas/New Year’s time frame (either Christmas week or New Year’s week) that does not count toward vacation.  In addition, categorical interns have a 10 day break between the PGY1 and 2 years.
